Benefits of Merino Wool

Merino Wool is Soft

When most people hear the word wool they immediately have horrible flashbacks of itchy sweaters they wore back in the day.  These sweaters were made with sheep's wool.  The fibers from sheep's wool are thick, heavy, and are covered in scales that create the scratchy feel.  Merino wool has changed all that.  Merino wool comes from a type of sheep that produces a product that is much finer than your standard sheep's wool.  Not only is the fiber much finer but the scales are finer as well and this creates a soft supple feel against your skin.

Sustainable

Merino sheep have a pretty good life.  They spend there day outside grazing in large pastures protected from predators and cared for with the same attention as members of the family.  Happy sheep produce the best wool.  Once per year, usually in the spring, they are brought in and there luscious wool coats are shaved.  Once they have been shaved its back out to the pasture and their wool coats begin to regrow.  This renewable process is what makes Merino wool  a sustainable environmentally friendly choice for apparel.

Moisture Wicking and Odor Control

The Merino wool fiber is filled with tiny pockets of air.  These pockets allow water vapor from perspiration to move through the fiber and out away from your skin.  This keeps your skin feeling dry and comfortable.  The ability to manage moisture as well as the fibers natural lanolin coating helps prevent bacteria from growing.  By limiting bacteria growth the odor that comes with the bacteria is limited as well.

Temperature Regulating

Merino wool can absorb 33% of its own weight in water.  The inner portion of the fiber will absorb this moisture keeping the outer layer of the fiber dry.  By keeping the moisture away from your skin you will feel dry and comfortable.

Synthetics

Polypropylene

Polypropylene was added to aid in the durability and moisture wicking properties of our socks.  In fact, polypropylene is one of the best materials for wicking moisture away from your skin.  It is also a strong and lightweight fiber.  The polypropylene will dry very quickly and is very comfortable against your skin creating a very luxurious feel.

Nylon

The Nylon was added to further strengthen the sock.  It also has better abrasion resistance than other synthetics helping to add durability to your socks.  Nylon also aids in moisture wicking and dries quickly when wet.

Spandex

A small amount of Spandex was added to give the sock elasticity.  The last thing anyone wants is to wear a sock that won’t stay put.  Saggy socks are extremely annoying.  The Spandex gives it just the right amount of stretch while not constricting your foot.  This also gives the sock a great fit around your arch.
